The work at home parent has it tough. She or he has to run a business and at the same time, take care of her or his family. If you’re a work at home parent, then chances are you’ll be dealing with both work and family under one roof and it sure is going to be tough. So here are a few steps to help you and other work at home parents out there do the balancing act.
Rule No. 1 – Designate a Room to Stand as Your Office.
As a work at home parent, this is one of the most important rules that you should follow. Yes, your house is your home but it also is your office so how do you separate the two? The trick is to designate a place in your house that will serve as your office. It doesn’t even have to be a room. A work at home parent can still work even if he or she only has a table and a computer for an office. However, you need to make sure that that section of the house is off-limits when you’re working. If you want to succeed as a work at home parent, then you need to set a few limitations. This is one of them.
Rule No. 2 – Set Office Hours.
If your goal is to be a successful work at home parent, then you must be prepared to spend a portion of your time and effort into operating the business. Set some time devoted solely to making money with your business and let your family know that there are certain times of the day where you have to work. The hours you have set for your office will also let your family and friends know when it’s ok to disturb you. This way, you, as work at home parent, don’t have to take time away from your work in order to accommodate the rest of the household.
Rule No. 3 – Phone Etiquette.
If you’re a work at home parent running your own home-based business, then chances are that you will be receiving important business calls in your home. Make it clear that no one but you answers your business line. Almost all phones these days have a mute button. You can thank technology for that, especially when the baby is crying and you’re on the phone talking to an important client.
Rule No. 4 – Have Some Sort of Routine.
Believe it or not but routines have their importance in our daily lives too. After a long while, they get boring but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have some basic function to perform. Rituals or routines such as dropping the kids off at the daycare before going on to work are important. Even if you are a work at home parent and you don’t leave the house for work, it’s still good if you say "I’m home" when you’re done for the day and say "I’m back for a bit" when you’re taking a break. This lets your kids know when you can or can’t be interrupted.
